Closed-Loop Cruises
A cruise that departs from and returns to the same U.S. port. U.S. citizens can typically re-enter the U.S. without a passport, using alternative documentation like a birth certificate, enhanced driver's license, or a passport card.
Examples: Cruises to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, or Bermuda that depart and return to a U.S. port.
Common Departure Ports: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, Galveston, and Los Angeles.
Open-Loop Cruises
A cruise that departs from one U.S. port and ends in another U.S. port, or starts in a foreign port and ends in a U.S. port. U.S. citizens must have a valid passport to re-enter the U.S.
Examples: Cruises that go from one U.S. port to another, such as a cruise from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale, or a cruise that starts in a foreign port and ends in a U.S. port.
Considerations: Even if a cruise is technically "closed-loop," some Caribbean islands (like Barbados, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique, St. Barts, and Trinidad & Tobago) might require a passport for disembarkation at those destinations.

Traveling to Europe
For travel to Europe, U.S. citizens will need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) authorization, which is an electronic travel authorization, not a visa, for short-term stays (up to 90 days). ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization system for visa-exempt travelers entering the EU for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). Citizens of countries whose nationals are not required to have a visa for short-term stays in the European countries requiring ETIAS, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, will need an ETIAS.
You can apply online via the official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile application. The ETIAS fee is €7, but it's waived for travelers under 18 and over 70. Most applications are processed within minutes, but some may take longer, up to 96 hours. An ETIAS is valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. The ETIAS aims to enhance security by screening travelers before they enter Europe and to facilitate border checks. ETIAS is planned to start operating in the last quarter of 2026. You can apply for an ETIAS travel authorization on the official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile application. If you get a new passport before your 3 years are up, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorization.
Looking to book a vacation or tour to Europe? Make an appointment with Leisure Travel Services office 573-329-8587.
Packing Smart
- Avoid over packing by only bringing what you truly need, which can reduce stress & make it easier to navigate airports/transportation.
- Rolling clothes instead of folding them saves space and minimizes wrinkles, especially for items like T-shirts & jeans.
- Packing cubes help organize your luggage and compress clothes, making it easier to find items and maximize space.
- Having a towel on hand can be useful, especially if you're staying in hostels or places where towels aren't always readily available.
- A portable battery pack can keep your electronic devices charged on the go, which is essential for staying connected & entertained.
Travel Essentials
- Keep copies of passport, visas, itinerary, & any important documents readily available.
- A well-stocked first-aid kit can help you address minor injuries or illnesses.
- Stay hydrated by carrying a reusable water bottle & refilling it throughout the day.
- If you're a light sleeper or prone to noise sensitivity, earplugs can help you get a better night's rest on planes or in noisy accommodations.
- Ditch the tourist traps and explore local cuisine for authentic flavors plus a more immersive experience.
- Engage with locals to get insider tips, recommendations, & a deeper understanding of the culture.
- If you have access, airport lounges can provide a comfortable & convenient space to relax before your flight.
- Check for any travel advisories or warnings for your destination and be aware of local laws & customs.
